The Most I’ve Ever Grown

Dahlia’s are such interesting flowers. Their dynamic blooms range in color from oranges, to pinks, to purples, to reds, to brown, and nearly every shade in-between. They can be small flowers at only 1” diameter or they can be huge with a face that is larger than my own.

This year I am growing the most dahlias I’ve ever grown, somewhere around 2,000 tubers. That will be 7 or 8 rows 65’ in length full of dahlias. I am growing soft purples, deep reds, peachy oranges, cream, and just kissed pinks.

It’s amazing to think that all that color, all that growth, is inside this small potato looking thing could easily be overlooked.

My favorite dahlias are the 3-4” flowers with a uniform ball like shape. They fit wonderfully in a bouquet without overwhelming it.

Or maybe my favorite is the lotus like flowers that bloom directly upward, opening themselves to the sky with large but uniform petals.

In truth, it’s hard to pick a favorite.

But these dahlias will capture the summer sun and radiate it back to us in the form of texture and color.

And it’s a good reminder to that something that we may initially take no notice of, only needs a bit of time and the right conditions to grow to become something that holds our breath in wonder.

I’ve started dividing my dahlias in preparation to plant them out in a month or two.

I can’t wait to see the bouquets of this year’s Summer Flower Share bursting with these flowers. I can’t wait to share these flowers with you.

Your Flower Farmer,

Heather
